National Hunger Awareness Day
(Updated: June 3, 2025, 11:33 a.m.)
Did you know more than 1 million people in North Carolina facing hunger today?
Did you know 13% of your fellow Orange county residents live in hunger?
The National Hunger Awareness Day was created to raise awareness about hunger and malnutrition in the United States, and to encourage positive changes in our communities.
This hunger level goes beyond the temporary discomfort we experience until we have our next meal. This day recognizes the persistent condition of constantly feeling hungry due to low or very low food security; of not knowing when you will have your next meal.
This month, you can make a difference in the lives of local families and individuals by taking these simple steps:- Donate to food banks either in person or online
- Donate to local fundraisings relate to food insecurity
- Volunteer at local events that raise awareness about food insecurity
- Spread the word about food and nutrition programs offered in North Carolina:
- SNAP - The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps.
- WIC - The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children provides healthy foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition and community services to new mothers, pregnant women and caretakers.
- Congregate Meals for Older Adults - This program provides a lunch time meal to older adults, which offers one third of the recommended daily dietary allowance.
- Senior Farmers' Market Voucher Program - Provides benefits to low-income older adults in participating counties to purchase locally grown fruits, vegetables, honey, and herbs. This program is limited, so we recommend contacting Orange County Passmore and Seymour Centers for more information.
