Raleigh, N.C. – NC State Extension announced that Amelia Lackey is completing an Extension internship this summer with the Orange County Center.

An Extension summer intern works with Extension personnel to deliver hands-on, educational programs. Job shadowing and mentoring help interns learn about the mission and work of North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

“Extension makes a positive difference in the community every day. We provide educational programs that connect communities with research-based information,” said Dr. David Monks, Director, NC State Extension and Associate Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

“Our internship program prepares students for challenging and rewarding careers in the Cooperative Extension System in addition to careers throughout food, agriculture, natural resources, and family and consumer sciences,” said Dr. Joseph Donaldson, Associate Professor and NC State Extension Specialist, who coordinates the NC State Extension internship program.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to host Amelia this summer in Orange County," said Jonathon Smith, County Extension Director. "She is interested in production agriculture and inspiring the next generation of agricultural leaders. We will show her how those interests align with Extension's mission daily and how she can transform ideas into action to strengthen communities."

This project received funding from the N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission. This work is supported by the Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates Program (Award Number 2024-68018-43454) of United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Lackey is a rising senior from the University of Mount Olive majoring in Agriculture Production Systems, and is a native of Staley, NC.
