(Updated: Sept. 4, 2025, 9:27 a.m.)
September is National Hunger Action Month.  This month we are highlighting organizations in Orange County that are taking action to feed people, empower communities, and solve food insecurity.  Our second story highlights Carrboro Farmers' Market, one of three farmers' markets in Orange County that offer the Double Bucks Program. --

Nourishing Community: The Carrboro Farmers' Market The Carrboro Farmers' Market, which celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2024, is an essential community asset. As one of three incorporated farmers' markets in Orange County, its core mission is to “create and sustain a vibrant and innovative market that supports our local farmers and artisans, while extending the benefits of local food to the greater community.”

Over 75 Market members sell directly to Market shoppers a wide variety of goods, including high-quality produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, and handcrafted items like pottery and woodwork. All products are grown or made within 50 miles of the market. Located in the Carrboro Town Commons at 301 West Main Street, the market is operated by the farmers and artisans themselves.

To help low-income shoppers and promote healthy eating, the market participates in the Double Bucks program. This nutrition incentive program provides a dollar-for-dollar match for SNAP/EBT and Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits (WIC FMNP and Seniors FMNP) up to $50. Double Bucks can be used on any SNAP-eligible item, from fresh produce and meat to vegetable plants for home gardens. This program is a triple win, supporting food security and improved health outcomes for SNAP participants, boosting the economic resilience of our farming community, and helping shoppers access fresh, local food.
