Fire-Resistant Landscaping in NC.
The fires in Lahaina, on the island of Maui, Hawaii emphasis the importance of making homes more resilient to fire.
In 2020, NC State Forestry Extension partnered with the NC Forestry Service wildfire mitigation foresters to author NC State University Publication Fire-Resistant Landscaping in North Carolina. This wonderful publication provides suggestions for homeowners to make their landscape more fire resistant.
It provides some recommendations on how to manage existing vegetation and suggest alternatives.
There are multiple tables which indicate NC native plant species selection with a low, medium, and high Flammability Rating. If you prefer mostly native plants for your garden, this Extension publication can assist you to add an additional native consideration layer when selecting plants for your garden.

As a horticulture extension agent, I value a table of native plants in one location that break out the flammability rating which can be used to suggest native plants for gardens in close proximity to home dwellings.
