The agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of an effective educational program to meet the needs of Orange and Durham County adult and youth populations in the following areas of responsibility; Livestock and forages; including but not be limited to swine, equine, cattle, poultry, goats, sheep, and pasture management. The agent will provide technical assistance to farmers and conduct joint educational programming for producers in both counties. The selected individual will attain instructor certification in Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) and certify youth participating in area livestock shows. The agent will also serve as the Cooperative Extension liaison to county livestock commodity organizations such as the Orange-Durham Cattlemen’s Association

Orange and Durham County jointly conduct youth livestock activities. This individual will facilitate and support county 4-H youth livestock initiatives such as educational contests (judging, skillathon, and/or quiz bowl), a 4-H livestock club, the Central Piedmont Junior Livestock Show, youth dairy shows, and other regional and state youth livestock shows that involve Durham and Orange County youth.

Additionally in Orange County only, the Agent will provide programming and technical assistance for residents on pond management and soil health management. This individual will serve on the Orange County Agricultural Summit planning committee and help to ensure the needs of producers are addressed by the event. Agent will be called upon to perform simple analyses of animal and plant pests using office lab equipment. Some row crop technical assistance may be requested as well. Individual will serve as the designee for the annual Tri-County Pasture Management Workshop and pond clinics.

A successful Extension Agent must demonstrate an ability and enthusiasm for serving broad audiences.
