Raleigh, N.C. – NC State Extension announced that Karissa Scott is completing an Extension internship this summer with the Orange County Center.

An Extension summer intern works with Extension personnel to deliver hands-on, educational programs. Job shadowing and mentoring help interns learn about the mission and work of North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

“Extension makes a positive difference in the community every day. We provide educational programs that connect communities with research-based information,” said Dr. Sarah Kirby, Interim Director, NC State Extension and State Program Leader for Family and Consumer Sciences.

“Our internship program is another way we help prepare students for challenging and rewarding careers in food, agriculture, natural resources, and family and consumer sciences” said Dr. David Monks, Interim Director, NC State Extension and Interim Associate Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

“Working at the Orange County Cooperative Extension office this summer has been a great way to learn more about the day-to-day operations of an Extension Agent”, says Scott. “Being able to shadow in different areas like Livestock, Food Security and 4-H, has shown me the unique responsibilities of each Agent and how my education could be applied within Extension in my future career.”

“Karissa has been a great addition to our team already this summer, assisting with new food security initiatives, 4-H camps, and even emergency preparedness planning”, says Orange County Extension Director Jonathon Smith. “Karissa is a very talented young professional who is building and strengthening her skills in order to make an impression here in Orange County this summer. We look forward to having her with us through the end of July.”

Scott is a 2025 graduate of Appalachian State University majoring in Agroecology & Sustainable Agriculture (Public Health), and is a native of Clayton, North Carolina. She will be starting graduate school at NC State University in the Fall.
