Collapse ▲The Orange County Department of Social Services (DSS) alerted residents at the end of October that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits — also known as Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) — may not be issued in November 2025 if the ongoing federal government shutdown continues past the end of October and no contingency funds are made available by the federal government.
Now that we are into November, the federal government anticipates releasing some contingency reserve funds to cover part of SNAP benefits in November, but the USDA has not yet determined how it will proceed. If the shutdown continues, the situation will be exacerbated, making it even more challenging for families in the weeks and months to come.
Our area pantries and nonprofits are working diligently to help fill the gap, but need our support! Here is where our Orange County and Municipal Staff can help! We are conducting another food drive from November 6 until December 19.

Many pantries love to receive meat and fresh vegetables, too! Meat should be purchased from a retail store or farm. Meat should have been processed and packed by a licensed processor. Produce should be of good quality and be able to be held for at least 2-3 days without spoiling. Check with your selected pantry first to make sure they have freezer and refrigerator capabilities before donating meat.
Each County Department and Town Staff Team is asked to keep track of the number of cans, boxes, and other containers of food they collect. Donations should be taken to an area pantry every week or as often as you can depending on how much is collected. Donations can be brought to the Orange County Department of Social Services Pantry located at 113 Mayo St, Hillsborough or you can “adopt” one or more of the area pantries listed below to donate items to.
Please contact pantries in advance to arrange a delivery time. It’s also encouraged for you to have a conversation with these pantries to make sure you are collecting the items they need most from the list above.
